PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Cricket West Indies (CWI) Vice-President Azim Bassarath has revealed he has not made up his mind on if he will seek to become president when Dr Kishore Shallow’s term comes to an end in 2028.

The 69-year-old Bassarath, who is also president of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board (TTCB), has served as Shallow’s deputy for two terms, the last of which began in March 2025.

However, after being named as Saint Vincent and the Grenadines’ minister of tourism and maritime affairs last December, Shallow announced that he would not seek re-election when his three-year term comes to an end.

During an interview on
Isports i95.5 FM on Thursday, Bassarath was asked whether he was interested in throwing his hat in the ring for the presidential post.

“I haven’t thought about it. I will be about 72 years of age at that time so I’m not sure if I will be physically fit to seek election,” he said.

“…My term of office in Trinidad comes at the end of 2029 so I’m hoping to serve out my term year in Trinidad.”

Bassarath said the last time a Trinidadian was at the helm of the governing body was back in 2007 when Ken Gordon was president of the West Indies Cricket Board.

He said, however, that even if he was not in a position to serve, they were other members of the TTCB who were interested in the position.

“There are other people in Trinidad who want to be president, so we maybe could support them,” Bassarath said.
