Vows – And the award goes to… (part 2)

For the beautiful bride, the wedding day is as much about the cake as it is about the having the perfect dress and décor, and many go to great lengths to ensure that it too, is perfect. Today’s VOWS shares our top picks of 2010. With your help we’d like to select the most impressive of the lot. E-mail your pick to: marketingpromotion@jamaicaobserver.com by 12:00 pm Saturday, January 22, 2011.

AND THE BEST WEDDING CAKE NOMINEES FOR 2010 ARE…

Ali Lue

Ali Lue and Yussuf Migoko chose a Nyla D’Andrea wedding cake — a lemon cake covered in fondant, decorated with tree branches, orchids, a butterfly and a dragonfly — a concept given to her by the bride — for their Strawberry Hill wedding and reception.

CJ & Angel

Selena Wong created Major CJ & Angel Reid’s beautiful wedding cake for their reception at the distinguished Craighton Estate. The four-tier cake featured layers of chocolate with raspberry filling, along with the words from the first reading of the ceremony (Ruth 1:16-17) written on each tier.

Damion & Denise

Resting before the head table at the Errol Flynn Marina reception of Damion and Denise Franklin was a lovely Ann Ramsay creation — a five-tier fruitcake covered in white fondant and decorated with fresh white roses and orchids; a green sash bordering the base of each tier.

Forbes/Martin

Following the ceremony at the University Chapel, guests in attendance at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge reception saw Kimberley and Davie Martin’s towering five-tier cake with a trail of red roses cascading down the side, courtesy of Jacqueline Pringle.

Kristina Chuck & JJ

Ace of cakes Selena Wong created this beautifully decorated four-tier fruitcake, adorned with cherry blossoms and Chinese characters to reflect the couple’s oriental wedding theme, for Kristina Chuck and James ‘JJ’ Smith’s wedding reception at the Mona Visitors’ Lodge in August.

Linsday & Dino

With many guests in attendance at their Half Moon Hotel nuptials, Dino and Lindsay Delvaille cut their impressive three-tier wedding cake created by Rose Lee.

Ma-Jali/Jai

Jai Carlos Henry wed Ma-Jali Cordelia Mbali at the romantic Highland House in Content, St James. Their three-tier traditional fruitcake decorated with soft pink roses came courtesy of Rose Lee.

Micas & Kevin

For their reception on the lawns of the Jamaica Pegasus, Dr Micas-Campbell and Kevin Foreman had a simple, yet stunning wedding cake. The result of a collaborative effort of Runaway Bay HEART Hotel Chef Lincoln Peterkin and Micas’s aunt, Grace Royal, the exquisite four-tier creation was inspired by the bride’s beautiful Maggie Sottero wedding gown.

Mitzi

Racquel Smith of ‘Sweet and Savoury Delights’ created a lovely three-tier cake decorated with orchids and daisies for the wedding of Mitzi and Norman Russell, whose ceremony was held at the Webster Memorial United Church, followed by a reception at the Talk of the Town, Jamaica Pegasus.

Renee & Marc

Renée and Marc Johnson chose a three-tier cake decorated with a chocolate bow and roses for their reception at the Morgan’s Harbour Hotel & Marina. The cake was created by Ethlyn Reid-Jones and decorated by Rochelle Laing of ‘A Likkle Slice of Heaven’.

Roxene & Christopher

Sage green cymbidium orchids decorated the Sheila Movery cake that was featured at the nuptials of Roxene and Christopher Alvaranga at the Hibiscus Lodge Hotel in Ocho Rios, St Ann.

Ruby-melody

Baked by Valerie Grant for their Craighton Estate reception, the Nyla D’Andrea-decorated wedding cake of Ruby & Everton Hardweare depicted a ‘winter wonderland’ theme and featured a single crystal ‘H’, symbolising the beginning of their new life together.

Shana/Rodger

‘Give-away father’ Lloyd Lawrence of Totally Delicious Bakery created the traditional fruitcake for Shana and Rodger Brown’s wedding, which was given an Indian-inspired design by the couple’s good friend, architect and interior designer Alison McIntyre, and decorated by Selena Wong. A cocktail reception at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel’s Top of the World, and later, dinner at the Talk of the Town followed the couple’s nuptials at the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

von Wartburg

On January 4, 2010, they were the first couple to experience the exclusive Weddings by Martha Stewart, and Rene and Melanie Von Wartburg chose the Sandals Negril Beach Resort ‘Vision in White’ theme, which included a beautiful two-tier cake created by chef Rayon Blagrove of Beaches Negril. The cake was covered in white fondant with dotted piping and doily lace, then topped with a white gladiolus stem.
