Vows – Love at first sight
David Hobson, key account manager, modern trade, at Pepsi Jamaica, wed Rachel Silvera, American International School of Kingston (AISK) teacher, and course coordinator, research supervisor and e-tutor at the University of the West Indies Open Campus, on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Ocho Rios. Vows shares their journey to the altar…
They First Met…
… at an event in Ocho Rios in the summer of 2007. “The moment I laid eyes on her I just knew it,” David recalled. Rachel felt the same, though it was the last thing on her mind when she showed up at the event. “Instant attraction,” a bubbly Rachel exclaimed. “I just knew it; it had to be love at first sight.” The couple recall staring at each other for a while before actually striking up a conversation and exchanging contact details. Not long after, a strong friendship developed and the inevitable relationship soon followed…
The Proposal…
… in 2008, while Rachel had been living in North Carolina, David paid her a visit. She had just received the keys to her new home, and he thought that signified a new beginning. He recalls a very “different” feeling overtaking him as she gave him a tour of her new home, and he envisioned a future with her as his wife. Without hesitation, he stopped, looked deep in her eyes and told her he loved her. She smiled at her towering knight and responded, “I love you, too.” What happened after was something Rachel would have never expected. It had only been little over a year since they met, but there was no doubting the love between them and David decided to take the next step. Down on one knee he asked, “Will you marry me?” A startled Rachel took only a second to recover, then with a big smile on her face, she responded with a resounding “Yes!”
Their Big Day…
… took three years of planning to make it the perfect wedding, on Saturday July 16, 2011. They decided on Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Ocho Rios, which boasts a panoramic view of Carib Ocho Rios. It was a wonderful day, perfect for a wedding. The church was beautifully decorated by Rosanna Chin Yee in turquoise, silver and white — Rachel’s favourite colours. David stood at the altar waiting for the woman he had fallen so deeply in love with four years ago. He had never seen her look so lovely. She swanned up the aisle to Pachelbel’s Canon in D Major wearing a gorgeous Alfred Angelo gown and clutching a bouquet of calla lilies. David couldn’t help remembering the moment they met as he smiled at his bride and she smiled back at him. To him, it seemed like forever before her two brothers, who had escorted her up the aisle, arrived. Officiating ministers Father Howard James and Monsignor Herbert Panton commenced the ceremony, joining them together in holy matrimony before family and friends… a moment they had been waiting for since the day they met.
The Reception…
…followed at Couples Sans Souci where the Kathy Cooper-decorated venue had guests gasping in awe.
“It was fantastic,” Rachel gushed.
The newly-weds soon had their first dance to Michael Jackson’s Lady in My Life shortly after they arrived, and described it as a moment they never wanted to end. David and Rachel enjoyed a magical honeymoon at Couples Sans Souci, an experience that they wish they could “relive every day”.
