What’s trending for 2013? – Designs By Minka

Our local brands are, that’s what!

Name: Karen Walton

Occupation: Nursing student.

I’m wearing… a red, green and gold fishtailed crotchet maxi dress.

My love affair with the brand started… Well it’s been going on for over 15 years. It started out with jewellery and a lot of people used to ask me where I got them. She then started making swimsuits for every beach party I used to go to (Frenchmen, John Greaves etc). Every time I went to a beach party I would wear a Minka design.

I support the brand because… When I wear her designs I feel very royal and regal. I also feel that she creates original pieces and I always get compliments from when I go out from persons who admire her designs. Just the fact that her designs make me feel outstanding I have really been sticking to them for many years.

I have… Over 20 pieces and I would have more if she could actually keep up with my orders. I try to get at least 1 or 2 pieces from her every six months or so.

My favourite is… an olive green dress she made for me. It ties at the neck and is shorter at the front than at the back. The design is very rich and that’s why it’s my favourite.

Name: Cen’c Love

Occupation: Entertainer/ Musician/ Singer

I’m wearing… a brown crotchet halter-top maxi dress that I’ve had for a while but didn’t get the chance to wear as yet.

My love affair with the brand started…. more than 5 years ago. My mom and a mutual friend introduced us to Minka. My friend modelled for her and I had heard people speak about her before. Once I came across her work I started wearing her designs.

I support the brand because… she is very original. I like crotchet because it is an ancient art and I also like Minka as a person. And lastly, I support her because of the original artist that she is.

I have… 100 maybe? (smiles). Seriously, I have tops, hats, bottoms, dresses and jewellery. We’ve previously done business together because my mother and I own a fashion boutique and we carry Minka’s designs. Also because of this, I own a lot of Minka designs.

My Favourite is… I have 2 favourites actually. A top I got from her that comes in cream and mustard. I can’t really describe it because it’s so original and I’ve never seen anyone else with one.

Name: Amber

Occupation: Disc Jockey, Irie Fm

I’m wearing… a multi-coloured two-piece swimsuit she made for my birthday last year.

My love affair with the brand started… About 6 to 7 years. Minka and I went to the same High School. During that time we grew pretty close and we’ve always supported each other in whatever way we could.

I support the brand because… because she is my sister. She has a great talent. I remember when we went to High School, Minka would walk around with thread in her knapsack knitting all day long. Its what she loves and that’s why I support her. Im willing to do whatever I can do to support the thing she loves.

I have… several Minka pieces.

My favourite is… actually a piece I haven’t worn yet. It’s a cream and orange dress that has Egyptian symbols. I’ve been saving it for a very special occasion.

Name: Dianne Fletcher

Occupation: School Administrator

I’m wearing… a pink web crochet, maxi dress.

My love affair with the brand started… in 2001. Minka started practising Buddhism and I’m a practitioner. We also share the zodiac sign Gemini and because of that we hit it off immediately. The friendship began there and so did the admiration of her work.

I support the brand because… I love her stuff. I feel great in them and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with next.

I have… about seven or eight Minka pieces.

My favourite is… an off-the-shoulder black dress.

Name: Sherrill Chong

Occupation: Doctor of Orthomolecular Medicine and Psychiatry (retired)

I’m wearing… a champagne, shell-stitched hooded ensemble.

I support the brand because… she is so original and so humble.

My love affair with the brand started… at the very beginning. At the time she only did bikinis but because of my age I tend to opt for more modest and sophisticated pieces and I just never felt I could wear those things. So I think I was one of the first persons requesting “cover-up” outfits. I love my shoulders to be showing but everything else covered from shoulders to ankle because I like the muscle tone of my shoulders. The first outfit she made for me was a pants suit that I’ve had now for about 12 years.

I have… five pieces.

My favourite is… the one I’m wearing. I don’t mind wearing it once a month because it’s so versatile that I can wear it different ways.
