Yes, there is an art to kissing!
Romance is a practical subject. You may know all the theory you want, but when it comes down to the wire, the practical stuff is what really matters.
One of the core components of romance is kissing. And yes, you did guess right, there is an art to this ancient display of affection.
Though some may argue that passionate kissing is a lost artform, there are others like Dr Alverston Bailey, author of the book, Sexplanations: A guide to discussing sex & sexuality in the Caribbean, who still believe that kissing is one of life’s sweetest pleasures.
“Many lovers revel in the joys of a deep, sensual kiss. We kiss each other to reveal affection, to portray deep love, to comfort, to greet, amongst other functions.”
Though there are no official classes teaching you how to French kiss, there are plenty of ways that you can improve your kissing skills.
“The type and intensity of the kiss is determined by the nature of the relationship between the giver and the recipient of the kiss,” Dr Bailey said.
This is an important point to bear in mind especially when you are about to make a move. Remember to be gentle at first as there is no need to use your tongue to try and suffocate your partner. Also, flirting a little bit before as well as being physically close to your partner can make kissing much easier.
So be spontaneous. Try something new and exotic like the Japanese kiss, or give your partner a longer, sensual and passionate French kiss.
The secret to a great kiss is being able to read your partner and being able to vary in the kind of kiss you deliver. So, for instance, you may decide to tease by biting gently on your lover’s lips, or you may nibble on their ear. Knowing when to do what will lead to great success in your kissing career.
“Our own experiences reveal that kissing is an indicator of deep affection or an expression of intense passion and evokes a myriad of reactions psychologically, biologically and socially. It promotes feelings of bonding and closeness between humans,” said Dr Bailey.
If you need another reason to kiss, Dr Bailey said that kissing itself releases a variety of pleasure hormones including oxytocin.
