The Dahlia No 5
An early-morning coffee turns into a late lunch and AW Fashion finds itself back at #5 within two days. It’s almost impossible to get enough of visual artist-turned-fashion designer Dahlia Jones-Prendergast.
First of all, there’s her stunning and oh-so-genteel mum Patricia Lawrence-Hue, her vivacious daughter Kate, her well-appointed home in the Golden Triangle and her travels from Jamaica to Miami, New York, and The Cayman Islands.
Then there’s her art, her passion for interiors and her most recent designs: the cut-to-fit dress that can be worn in five different ways complete with her signature lotus trademark on each.
Consider a work of art on a work of art, since we are label-obsessed. “I am inspired by my inner reflections. Each painting or design is an entity unto itself, making them a labour of love.”
It’s no idle boast! Her brush strokes are not controlled but instinctual, and in unison create work that merely reflects the tropical environs in which she’s found herself.

The significance of the number five…
The number five is quite significant: it represents the day I was born; I live at number five; and I’ve designed a dress that can be worn five different ways. Isn’t that something?
On her design sensibilities…
I’ve been most creative in Jamaica. New York was where my creativity started to flow. The Cayman Islands influenced my picturesque paintings, especially the ocean pieces, as my home in Cayman was near the beach. My first degree in Fashion Merchandising allowed me to explore my creativity and improve on what I already knew as an artist.

The Dahlia No 5 dresses can be worn in five different ways, and I think that’s very unique because it’s a simple, chic dress that hugs the body and is super-versatile!

The woman on the go, who is so confident that she’s able to slip into one of my dresses, and rock it with effortless style and class.

Well, I plan to immerse myself into interior designing and venture into accessory designing.
