Can you pay my bills?
In Bills, Bills, Bills, Destiny’s Child asks the questions many young women have been reared into expecting from the men they’re with — Can you pay my bills? Can you pay my telephone bills? Can you pay my automo’ bills? If you did then maybe we could chill.
Even some so-called independent women have these expectations, and even when love enters the picture, some argue that love and money go hand-in-hand.
We asked women, Is it OK for you to be in a relationship with one man who does nothing for you and then turn around asking another man to pay your bills?
Kayla, 30:
If he is my man, why should I have to ask another man to do what he is not doing? I would leave him and give my attention to the one who is willing to be a real man in my life.
Michelle, 38:
If I have to ask another man to pay my bills then the one I call my man has to step down from his role and let me be with someone who is more dedicated to being my man.
Nataliah, 27:
First of all, if he is with me we would have already worked out what is expected of him. If he is my man then I’m expecting him to act like my man. Why have me asking another man to do what he should be doing so he can lie around doing nothing?
Sheri, 36:
Why would I be with someone who does nothing for me? It’s not a matter of sounding materialistic; it’s just the facts of life. I don’t need any dead-weight in my life.
Nadene, 32:
Listen, good sex alone can’t pay bills. I don’t want a man who is stuck on one level. So if I am with you and still need another man to fulfil other needs, then I will help you pack so you can move on and find a less ambitious woman who can appreciate your lazy behind.
