Grab-and-go breakfast ideas for kids
BETWEEN getting ready for work, your child for school, and completing odd chores, a parent’s morning can be really hectic. This means that it could be it quite difficult to fix breakfast for your children and still get them to school on time.
But breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and below, nutritionist Donovan Grant has some quick fixes that should be convenient on mornings when you are in a hurry:
Dress up yoghurt
Fruits are rich in essential vitamins and minerals. Yoghurt is a snack that many kids love. Take plain yoghurt and cut a few pieces of fruit in it. If your child likes nuts and you have some — preferably unsalted — you could also add a few, as well as some granola for the perfect parfait.
Omelette
An omelette is quick and easy to make, and eggs are a great source of protein for children. Add ham or sausages and cheese and green peppers if desired. You can serve this to your child with wholewheat bread and some fruit juice.
Oatmeal
Oatmeal is heart and tummy healthy. It is quick to prepare and you could add spices like cinnamon or honey for flavouring. Some children also like fruits in or alongside their oatmeal. This could replace the need for a sweetner.
Fruit smoothie
Using fruits you have at home — frozen preferably — make a breakfast smoothie. Use fruits that are palatable when blended, for example, a combination of bananas, mangoes and strawberries or other berries blended with some coconut water. This is a rich combination of vitamins and minerals. You could also add plain yoghurt to the mix and offer your child a granola or protein bar with the smoothie.

Make wholewheat toast and apply peanut butter, cheese or fruit jellies or jams. Add a side of fruit whether naturally juiced, or the fruit itself for vitamins and minerals.
