5 signs you need to start afresh somewhere else

Marie BERBICK-BAILEY

THERE are times when life can get really heavy and stagnant and the only way forward is to start afresh. A fresh start isn’t just about changing your routine, it can mean moving to a new city, finding a new job, forming new friendships, or even embracing a completely new season of life. I’ve done that a few times in my life with boldness.

Shifting is a powerful tool for growth, and many women, yes, even legends like Tina Turner and, yes, myself included, have had to make bold moves to reclaim our identity, purpose, peace, and joy.

Here are five signs that it may be time for you to start afresh somewhere else:

You feel stuck despite your efforts

When you’ve tried everything to make a situation work — relationships, careers, social circles — and nothing changes, it may be a signal that your environment is holding you back. Sometimes no amount of effort can make growth happen if the soil is infertile.

Remember our favourite girl Tina Turner left an abusive relationship and a stifling career situation. She reinvented herself and became a global icon. She later relocated to Europe with a new partner and flourished there! Her environment had been toxic; a shift allowed her gifts to flourish.

Your energy is constantly drained

If you feel exhausted, discouraged, or emotionally depleted more often than not, it may be more than just stress, it could be a sign that your surroundings no longer serve your growth. Energy is contagious; if the people, place or job you’re in consistently drain you, it’s a clear signal to consider a fresh start.

When I moved from Jamaica to the United States in 2018, leaving behind a corporate career, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into, but I knew my spirit was being called to something bigger. That shift allowed me to step fully into ministry, build Marie Berbick Ministries International, and become a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awardee.

You keep repeating patterns

Do you notice the same frustrations, conflicts, or disappointments happening over and over? Sometimes a shift in environment is the only way to break destructive cycles. A new location or community provides fresh perspectives, healthier dynamics, and the chance to rewrite your story.

Many women who relocate find that by changing cities or countries, they suddenly attract better opportunities and healthier relationships.

You no longer feel inspired or motivated

When your surroundings no longer excite you, give you peace, or fuel your passion, it’s a sign your growth has plateaued. Inspiration often comes from fresh experiences, new challenges, and exposure to people who are doing things differently. If you’re coasting instead of thriving, a move can ignite the spark you’ve been missing.

Research potential cities, communities, or career paths that align with your passions. Ask yourself: Where can I thrive, feel challenged, and continue to grow spiritually, professionally and personally?

Your spirit is whispering “move”

Sometimes, the clearest sign comes from within. Your intuition, prayers, and spiritual discernment may repeatedly nudge you towards change. Ignoring this inner voice can leave you stuck, frustrated, and unfulfilled. Trust the prompting to take bold steps — even if it feels risky. In 2016 I packed up my kids and moved to Mandeville from Portmore to start a new job in a place I had no family.

For me, following God’s prompting to relocate and start anew was a leap of faith. It was uncomfortable at first, but it positioned me to build a ministry, reach more people, and fully embrace my calling.

How to shift and start afresh

Once you identify these signs, take practical steps:

•Pray and seek guidance to confirm the timing.

•Plan the move — financially, emotionally and spiritually.

•Build a support system in your new location — friends, mentors, and faith communities.

•Embrace new opportunities with an open heart and a clear mind.

Remember, starting afresh isn’t running away; it’s stepping forward. It’s choosing growth over comfort, purpose over stagnation, and joy over compromise. Like Tina Turner, like me, and like countless women before us, a bold move can open doors you never imagined.

Ladies, listen to your spirit. If it’s telling you to move, to change, to start anew, trust it. The right shift can lead to freedom, fulfilment, and a life you’re proud to live.
