The worst relationship advice I’ve ever received — and how it messed me up
NO relationship is perfect; all relationships have glitches. Whenever these glitches arise, some friends and family members decide to intervene and offer unsolicited advice. All Woman asked readers to share the worst relationship advice they have ever received, and how their lives changed as a result.
Tanika:
When I was a teenager I met a guy. He was 25 and I was 16. At the time I thought it was so nice to have an older guy interested in me. Another girl was trying to get his attention, and I thought he would leave me for her. My friend told me that I had to have sex with him to keep him. We had sex, I got pregnant, I told him about the pregnancy, he disappeared, and so did my dream to become a doctor. To this day I have no idea where he went. The pregnancy was a setback because the baby was born during exam time. It took years, but I eventually did my CXCs and got back on track. I’m not in the medical field, but at least I have a career.
Ricky:
I was married briefly. I knew I wanted to marry her, but I wasn’t ready. Something wasn’t right, and I didn’t find out what it was until after the marriage. My family loved her and encouraged me to marry her before she got tired of waiting. That was the worst decision I ever made. She was a snake and a thief.
Tamara:
I thought my ex had money because he drove a nice car and he had a nice house. My mother told me that I needed to get pregnant for him. Stupid me stopped taking birth control and got pregnant. I was so happy, because the only thing going through my mind was that my child would have a father with a little money. Little did I know that he was just house-sitting for a friend who was working overseas. It’s a good thing I was in a good job.
Kim:
My friend told me to make my boyfriend jealous so that he would pay more attention to me. My first attempt was a late call around 12:00 am when I slept over for the weekend. To cut a long story short, he got physical and I ended up at the doctor’s office. I missed a new job opportunity because I was sick.
Mark:
Someone who was interested in me started spreading rumours about my wife. It was a close friend, so she knew how to make it seem real. My wife and I had a big argument, and she denied the rumours. The ‘friend’ told me that cheating on my wife would level the playing field. I had a one-night-stand and the girl got pregnant. I’m now going through a bitter divorce.
