Why you should keep your work and personal life separate
No doubt about it, you spend the majority of your time at work. It is thus expected that you will form bonds, possibly even lifetime bonds. However, work is work, and it is always best to be safe than sorry when it comes to mixing business with your personal life, as the people below share.
NT:
My first husband still works at the same organisation as I do and even though I am married again, people still bring up old news in gossip. When my first marriage was unravelling, it was a horrible experience as I remembered not wanting to go to work because of the gossip. I think it is better to keep your business tight and if you can, avoid office affairs because that can sink your career faster than the Titanic went down.
MC:
I exposed my coworkers to my relationship years ago and I am still regretting that I did. I was dating a manager secretly and I told them because we all ate lunch together. Now every time I get a promotion, they have a lot to say and I have even heard of things said by them behind my back. I think you should keep your mouth shut when it comes to your personal life. Just deal with work matters and that’s it.
Stacey:
You cannot mix business with pleasure. I don’t trust people, period, so I don’t really have issues on my job where that is concerned. From a child, my mother told me to stay out of people’s business and keep my business private. I pick up my phone when I am home in my personal space and call my mother who has always been and will always be my best friend.
Taylor:
I think you should keep your personal affairs to yourself because it can be used to cripple your career. I have coworkers, not friends at work. I respect my coworkers but I don’t hang out with them outside of work because they are not my friends. I don’t give my phone number to them because they are not my friends. They are simply people I work with and to keep it that way, I put in the necessary measures in place to guard against invasion.
Kelly:
I keep landlords and coworkers out of my personal life. All my dealings with these people are about business.
