FashionEnira

Known to many as Fashionenira, Devarine McLean has spent the past few years amassing thousands of customers to her namesake Half-Way-Tree-located and e-commerce store FashionEnira. She made a name for herself early on in her career with the introduction of her ripped denim shorts collections. This catapulted her brand name on the fashion scene and grew her niche market from its early 2013 online (Instagram) denim offerings to her latest, vintage clothing, make-up, ready-made clothing, accessories & footwear, and her introduction into creative directing and styling.

McLean recalls the influence of her mother, who was a fashion designer and fashion design teacher. She credits her mother for her early exposure to styling and the transformative power of clothes. “Being able to express my creativity through the way I dress has also proven to me that my style can be very influential. Sometimes we see a particular style or trend that we would love to rock but we are not confident enough, but by seeing someone else work that style/trend we are motivated to go for it,” she said.

Despite always having had a passion for fashion, the self-taught designer majored in chemistry in college, also getting certified in Surgical Technology following the instruction of her traditional parents, who viewed academics as the best route to success. It was after dabbling in ripped denim sales online, and the non-use of her academic credentials that she began to realise just how dissatisfied she was with the routine of a “9 to 5” and was pushed to leave and start fashion full-time. She has since received certifications in fashion illustration, skincare & make-up and hair cutting and styling.

McLean, whose fashion sense can be described as “out-of-the-box”, says that she does not necessarily follow trends. This is much to the benefit of her customers who are particularly appreciative of her unique style which is reflected in the clothes she stocks for them. “What I offer in-store is definitely a reflection of my personal style. I don’t like ‘the usual’ stuff and I try to offer that difference to my customers, in addition to stocking styles that are currently trending.”

She makes sure to research past and present trends and notes, while she is proactive in doing thorough industry research (both locally and abroad), she also stays true to her creative self and personal style. It is clearly working. After being contacted by Sharon Burke of Solid Agency to do on-set styling, McLean now boasts an impressive and growing client list, having done styling on Spice and recording artistes Jahmiel and Ishawna.
