Health benefits of broccoli
Dear Donovan,
I hear broccoli is a super food. Is this true? If so, what are some of the benefits and should I be eating more of it?
Broccoli is a member of the vegetable family which includes kale, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, pak choi, cabbage, collard greens, rutabaga, and turnips. Broccoli is considered one of the most healthy and nutritious vegetables around. It is even considered by many to be a super food because of its nutritional composition. It is packed with vitamins and minerals, fibre and antioxidants.
The antioxidants present in broccoli might be very important in the fight against cancer. It should also be noted that the vitamin C present in broccoli can be important in iron absorption. Although the amount of calcium present in broccoli might not be as high as in milk, broccoli is still a great source of calcium which can help to control blood pressure and build strong bones. In addition, broccoli also boosts the immune system, lowers the incidence of cataracts, and improves cardiovascular health.
Broccoli can be seen as one of the most nutrient dense foods. It can be eaten raw or cooked, and gently steaming it will bring out its full flavour. Broccoli should not be overcooked because this will make it soft and mushy and it may also lose nutritive value and flavour. The calorie content of broccoli is low, around 31 calories per cup, and it might be helpful for those on a weight-loss diet.
In order to get the best results from broccoli, at least one cup should be taken three to five times per week. Studies have also found that the young broccoli are higher in nutrients than the more mature plant.
I totally recommend that you consume sufficient amounts of broccoli in your diet. Good luck!
