International Women’s Day 2019 schedule of activities

WHAT: Banner event – IWD observation and celebration. Women in leadership visual presentation; women in innovation testimonial; award ceremony
This will be the official day of observation and celebration to join with women across the global village to highlight outstanding innovation among Jamaican women and recognise gender transformative leadership in various fields (ie government, militia, STEM, business, digital economy, finance, medicine, agriculture, religion, etc).

WHAT: UNDP Private Sector Breakfast – Gender Equality Results
This breakfast is with the private sector companies – Rubis Energy Jamaica, Island Grill, Facey Commodity, CariMed, NCB, Sandals Resorts, JMMB and a few more. They will be presenting the gender equality results from the Gender Equality Seal Project.

WHAT: Ring the Bell for Gender Equality
The Jamaica Stock Exchange (JSE) will participate in the global Ring the Bell for Gender Equality at the opening of the exchange on International Women’s Day. UN Women together with IADB Invest is collaborating with the JSE on the initiative.
The 5th Annual Ring the Bell for Gender Equality Ceremony aims at bringing attention to the pivotal role the private sector can play in advancing gender equality to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and raising awareness about the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs).
Participating exchanges are requested to make pledge(s) to take concrete action to promote gender equality as part of their participation in the Ring the Bell for Gender Equality events.

WHAT: Women in Law Jamaica Conference
The conference is a wonderful opportunity to benefit from the experience of legal professionals and practitioners from around the world. They will address attendees on issues relating to the opportunities and matters of inclusiveness and diversity in law for women.
Women in Law promotes the advancement of women everywhere, and addresses the delicate matter of balancing the rules of engagement and improved policy and management practices that impact women.

WHAT: Colour Me Woman Conference
The Colour Me Woman Conference is a deliberate effort to invest in the continued development of women in our society. The conference will allow for us to spread our wings and share the learning and developmental opportunities with other young women. Themed ‘Strong Women, Strong World: Igniting Passion, Persistence and Purpose’, the main objective is to provide participants with crucial and practical tools for personal and professional growth.

WHERE: United Nations Headquarters, New York
WHAT: The sixty-third session of the Commission on the Status of Women.
The sixty-third session of the Commission will take place from 11 to 22 March 2019. The Commission will address as its priority theme ‘Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable infrastructure for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls’. In addition, it will evaluate progress in the implementation of the agreed conclusions from the sixtieth session (2016) on ‘Women’s empowerment and the link to sustainable development’. The Commission will also discuss a focus area, ‘Women and girls of African descent’.
The ten-day session will include a ministerial segment with round tables and other high-level interactive dialogues, a general discussion, as well as interactive and expert panel discussions. Stakeholders will organise many side events to draw attention to critical aspects of the work on gender equality.

WHAT: Launch of the Gender Ambassador Programme (GAP)
Through the Gender Ambassador Programme (GAP), the Bureau of Gender Affairs (BGA) intends to strengthen its partnership with the Ministry of Education to extend its programmes to high school and tertiary institutions. These students will work closely with the BGA to mainstream gender equality in the selected institutions.
