Marcia Adams’ Beauty Lies Within
Marcia Adams’ Beauty Lies Within is the moniker for a collection of eccentric jewellery. The timeless pieces, crafted by hand by novice jewellery designer Marcia Adams, aren’t just eye-catching, they’re functional as well; a vibrant expression of Rock culture. All Woman Fashion (AWF) met with Adams recently and discovered more…
Adams is a mother of three who is passionate about wearable art “I’m coming from nothing. I didn’t know I had this talent in me, as I discovered my creativity in 2016 when I started the January Art & Craft Work Project at the Jamaican Foundation for Lifelong Learning.” And she is indeed a lifelong learner; Adams still attends classes to sharpen her skills and learn new techniques.
For her, the design process is simple, and she gets inspired by the fabrics — often sourced overseas. “The more I create, the more compliments I get and the more I feel inspired to go on. When I’m at home and something comes to mind, I either make a note of it (the style and idea) or do a sketch of it for a later date, especially if I’m in the middle of creating something else,” she shares.
Inspirations, surprisingly, come from various avenues, most often from her children. Her daughter Adanah is oftentimes her greatest and kindest critics, while her sons Odain and Michael are more concerned with practicality. “Adanah is in love with just about every piece of jewellery I create, and that motivates me. Odain and Michael, on the other hand, admire them but are not afraid to point out ways to improve.
Adams uses aluminium, newspaper clippings, copper, denim, African wax prints, seashells, and semi-precious stones to create handbags, bottles for décor, rings, chokers/necklaces, paper collages and her own African silhouettes be it in fabrics or on canvas paper.
She has many goals, but foremost and within her reach is the dream of “putting my name on the map and being recognised as one of the greats”.
AWF thinks she just might check off those boxes
