Lattecha’s Artistic Strokes
Rock-born Lattecha Willocks, after painting towns across the world red, is back home to share her experiences with art aficionados worldwide. From her self-titled gallery, located off the beaten path of West End, Negril, Willocks creates vivid paintings and even transforms her beautiful creations to wearable art. The self-proclaimed enigmatic introvert also opens her quaint studio for personalised tours where guests can sip on bush tea from her garden while chit-chatting about art.
Though she excelled in the arts during school this did not materialise in a career until years later. “I lived in Austria for a year in the early naughts and that was the first time after leaving high school that I started working on my art. It took another eight years for me to… start thinking that it could be a potential career move,” she tells All Woman Fashion (AWF).
In 2009, Willocks says she sold all 12 paintings she produced. From there, her confidence grew and she started to put down roots in the art world. Now her garden gallery churns out paintings that document the journey of women; they are whimsically bold and feminine. Her purses, which she makes from fabric sourced locally, are a fun and fashionable way to take her creations on the go. “Many of my ideas come from my travels… I am inspired by the sights, sounds, emotions that I experience. Often, I only get as far as the jerk chicken man down the road, but it all counts,” she explained.
Willocks says her creations appeal to women who are well-read, well-travelled and who, in addition to having a healthy appreciation for the Jamaican culture, also have a robust curiosity about cultures far and wide. With a solo exhibit in Germany and Jamaica under her belt and constant boosts of inspiration, Lattecha Willocks continues to create for the worldly citizen and encourages everyone to live each day the artful way.
