Mamayashi’s Little Miss Lou Collection
In August, Jamaican fashion designer Yashi aka Mamayashi debuted her Miss Lou Collection at the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival in New York to commemorate the celebration of Louise ‘Miss Lou’ Bennett-Coverley’s 100th birthday. Weeks later, the designer transformed some of those pieces into the collection, her first official children’s showcase.
Mamayashi sent child models down the runway in bandana printed-designs at the Island Child Style SMS Edition 2019 runway show on October 5.
The Manchester-born, New York-bred designer creates original designs for the culturally aware and regally confident shopper. Her design journey began in her father’s shop where he plied his trade as a tailor. Her first designs included hand-made dolls, but her true talent materialised when she began redesigning her clothes during her teenage years.
The Little Miss Lou Collection featured vibrant textures and tones courtesy of fabrics sourced from local suppliers, and paid homage to the Jamaican poet, folklorist, writer, and educator’s legacy with full skirts and long dresses reminiscent of those she once wore.
Mamayashi’s designs are heavily influenced by her love for Africa and the Rastafari journey and she uses her creations to bridge ancestral history to modern life.
