Karene Baker-Tharkur: Drawing her path in a man’s world
EVER since she was young, Karene Baker-Tharkur felt she was destined to be a difference maker, and she wanted to use architecture to do it. Despite operating in a field that has been traditionally male dominated she has successfully etched her way as the only woman draughtsman at the National Education Trust (NET), whose mandate is to improve infrastructure for schools islandwide.
But while her dream was always in sight, the former St Hugh’s High student faced several hurdles along her way. “In 2006 I applied to UTech [University of Technology, Jamaica] to obtain a degree in architectural studies. However, I wasn’t accepted because of the competitive nature of the programme,” she said.
Despite the rejections, her determination became stronger and she is now regarded as a key member in the development of the education sector.
“I was finally accepted and obtained my bachelors in 2014, and achieved a diploma in draughting and building technology from Vocational Training Development Institute while attaining skills and certificates in real estate, project management and school safety. This has led me, in my current role, to support the design infrastructure expansions for schools and providing quality assurance standards,” she added.
Baker-Tharkur is driven by the love of architecture and improving the quality of life for children, which she further realised while at NET’s ground-breaking ceremony for a new classroom block at Bridgeport High School, which she helped design.
“I became emotional when I saw the joy from the staff and students. I consider myself fortunate to be able to work with an amazing team with a common goal in putting focus on our nation’s children, and the impact our work has on their future.”
Latoya Harris-Ghartey, executive director of the National Education Trust, continues to foster a diverse work environment where women like Baker-Tharkur can thrive in a predominantly male field.
“At NET our culture is built on inclusivity and empowerment. Since joining the team Karene has displayed an excellent work ethic and embodies one of our core values of innovation, which has helped us reach our primary objectives,” she said.
Baker-Tharkur is encouraging women to keep fighting for their dreams, no matter the challenges they face.
“Don’t be intimidated by what society considers to be a woman’s job. There’s always something in life that tries to knock you down but you have to be determined that you’ll win the match, no matter how hard it is. The love and passion for your job will keep you going,” she encouraged.
