Effective stress-relief techniques

STAYING calm and centred during the hustle and bustle of the holidays may seem impossible, but it’s attainable once you know how to practise effective stress-relief techniques.

Life coach Beth-Ann Falconer says high stress and anxiety are expected because there’s a lot happening in the season, but that doesn’t mean that you should allow yourself to become overwhelmed.

“The key is to pace yourself, remind yourself of the bigger picture, don’t bow to pressure, and remember that it’s only a few days of revelling, and then life returns to normal,” she said. “It’s this normalcy that you will have to keep in your head at all times, so you can remain grounded.”

She suggests these techniques to help you stay calm and centred during the holidays:

Deep breathing exercises

How to do it: Inhale deeply through your nose for four counts, hold for four counts, and exhale slowly through your mouth for six to eight counts. Repeat five to 10 times.

Why it works: Activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing stress and calming your mind.

Practise gratitude

How to do it: Write down three things you’re grateful for each day. Focus on positive moments, no matter how small.

Why it works: Shifting your focus to gratitude can improve your mood and reduce anxiety.

Move your body

Go for a brisk walk, dance to your favourite holiday playlist, or do yoga. Even 10–15 minutes of movement can release endorphins and ease tension.

Set boundaries

Politely say “no” to unnecessary commitments or tasks that overwhelm you. Prioritise what matters most to you this season.

Schedule “me time”

Take 15–30 minutes a day for yourself, whether it’s enjoying a cup of tea, meditating, reading, or listening to calming music.

Aromatherapy

Use essential oils like lavender, peppermint, or eucalyptus to create a relaxing atmosphere. You can diffuse them, add them to a bath, or apply diluted oils to your wrists.

Mindfulness or meditation

How to do it: Sit quietly, focus on your breath, or follow a guided meditation through an app.

Why it works: Helps you stay in the present moment and reduces holiday overwhelm.

Laugh often

Watch a funny holiday movie or spend time with people who lift your spirits. Laughter can significantly reduce stress hormones.

Simplify your to-do list

Break tasks into smaller steps, delegate where possible, and let go of perfectionism. Focus on what truly brings joy.

Connect with loved ones

Spend quality time with friends or family, even if virtually. Meaningful connections can reduce feelings of stress and loneliness.
