Energising workout ideas for combatting fatigue with exercise

FATIGUE can feel overwhelming, but the right kinds of exercise can naturally boost your energy levels, improve circulation, and lift your mood. Workout developer Mesha-Gaye Wright says, in some cases, exercise can offer the same effect caffeine does, and boost endorphins to give you that kick-start you need to get going.

Here are some energising workout ideas she says help combat tiredness naturally:

Morning movement boost

Start your day with light exercises to wake up your body:

• Stretching or yoga flow: Gentle stretches like a sun salutation sequence can awaken stiff muscles and enhance circulation.

• Dynamic movements: Incorporate five to 10 minutes of exercises like leg swings, arm circles, and jumping jacks to get your blood flowing.

Quick cardio sessions

When you’re feeling tired, short bursts of cardio can recharge your body and mind.

Try:

• 10-minute brisk walk: Whether outdoors or on a treadmill, walking energises without overexertion.

• Mini HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training): Perform 20 seconds of jumping jacks, followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated for five minutes.

Mindful movement

Low-impact exercises can fight fatigue while calming your mind.

Options include:

• Tai chi: This meditative martial art involves slow, deliberate movements that reduce stress and promote energy flow.

• Pilates: Focused breathing and core engagement energise the body while enhancing posture and flexibility.

Outdoor workouts

Fresh air and sunlight naturally boost energy levels:

• Cycling or jogging: Even 15 minutes outside can refresh your mind.

• Hiking: Combine exercise with nature for an added mental boost.

Midday energy boosters

Combat the midday slump with quick, energising exercises:

• Bodyweight circuit: Do one round of 10 squats, 10 push-ups, and 10 lunges to stimulate circulation.

• Dance break: Put on your favourite upbeat song and dance for five minutes.

Post-work recovery

End-of-day fatigue can make exercise feel impossible, but gentle movement can actually re-energise:

• Evening yoga or stretching: Focus on calming poses like child’s pose, cat-cow, or forward folds to relieve tension.

• Walk and unwind: A relaxed stroll can help you shake off the day and prepare for restful sleep.

Tips for success

Keep it short: When fatigued, aim for 10-15 minutes of movement to avoid overexertion.

Listen to your body: Avoid high-intensity workouts if you feel drained; opt for lighter activities.

Stay hydrated: Dehydration can worsen fatigue, so drink water before and after exercising.

Focus on consistency: Regular, small workouts are better than sporadic intense sessions.

“By incorporating these energising workouts into your routine, you can fight fatigue naturally and feel more refreshed throughout the day,” Wright said.
