WATCH: UTECH admin staff stage protest, demand better salaries
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Ancillary, technical, and administrative staff at the University of Technology (UTECH) protested outside the school’s entrance on Friday morning, calling for better salaries.
Staff members are demanding compensation at the same level as other workers in the public education system, and they insist that parity must be achieved by the end of the month.
“Wi tired a di promises,” one protester said, as the crowd expressed that their current salaries are insufficient to maintain a decent standard of living.
“Wi want wi parity. We getting lower dan minimum wage right now. We can’t finance ourselves. As we get the pay it done, before we get the money inna we hand,” another expressed. “Mi nuh know how we ago manage fi di next two weeks.”
The protesters also expressed their dissatisfaction with the fact that only a select few staff members received retroactive pay increases.
