A Yallahs-style Day of Thanks

Last Thursday, November 23, as Americans celebrated Thanksgiving, FurnitureLand & Karmen’s Kollection Managing Director Carmen Brown transported friends and family to paradise with a Jamaican-themed Thanksgiving meal. The almost three-decade-long-held tradition (paused due to COVID-19) of celebrating loyal clients, family and friends is a much-anticipated outing for clients too! The food, vibe, and music courtesy of DJ Courtney lived up to the tradition of excellence.

On the subject of food: cooks from as far as Retrieve, Hanover make the annual trek to Hylton’s Beach, Yallahs, St Thomas to prepare some of Brown’s favourites, notably roast yam, mannish water, curried mutton, and jerked pork.

In-demand caterer Lorraine Fung handled other menu items, which included:Escoveitched fish, jerk chicken, curried lobster, and glazed ham served with an endless array of sides.

And while guests relished the tasty offerings, Thanksgiving regulars knew to leave space on their plates for the yearly highlight: Miss Veta’s jerked turkey! Each year, resident roaster Veta Kerr adds a ‘yaad’ twist to her recipe, which does not skimp on flavour. Her secret jerk seasoning gives the traditional Thanksgiving turkey a flavourful island twist that leaves guests wanting more.

Dessert offerings courtesy of Carolyn Brown included the Thanksgiving cake, rum cake, as well as an array of puddings – cassava, cornmeal, and sweet potato.
