Denmark to kick start European Qualifiers against Northern Ireland

Following the conclusion of Europe’s top leagues, the European Qualifiers take centre stage for the next few weeks. Today, Friday, June 16, Denmark will kick-start their campaign against Northern Ireland, then on Saturday, Euro 2024 host, Germany, will go head-to-head with Poland in an eagerly anticipated clash in Warsaw.

Event # 1 – EURO – Denmark vs NOR Ireland – 1:45 PM

Denmark will host Northern Ireland at home tomorrow aiming to bounce back from a shocking 3-2 defeat to minnows Kazakhstan in their previous EURO qualifier. Indeed, Denmark had things all their way in their previous game against Kazakhstan leading 2-0 in the first half. However, the Danes and their fans weren’t prepared for what would have transpired in the final 20 minutes of the games, as Denmark shockingly conceded three goals within the final 20 minutes of the game. With that result, they now have one win and one loss from their opening two matches and must win on home turf if they are to advance from their group.

Northern Ireland, on the other hand, could not have envisioned an easier start to their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, as they faced minnows San Marino in their opening game – San Marino have never won a competitive match in their history – and Northern Ireland obliged to claim a comfortable 2-0 win. However, Northern Ireland were brought back down to earth just three days later, as they were ambushed and beaten 1-0 at home by Finland, despite Finland having just two shots on target during the entire match. Northern Ireland will be aiming to improve on their overall Nations League campaign having won just one of their last six matches in that competition, while securing just two wins in their last nine matches in all competitions.

Key Stats

• Denmark – Denmark have won their last nine home games in qualifying for major tournaments (World Cup/Euros), conceding just three times while scoring 34 goals in those wins.

• Northern Ireland – In all competitions, Northern Ireland have won just two of their last nine matches (D2 L5) and lost 1-0 to Finland last time out in a European Championship qualifier. Indeed, Northern Ireland are winless in five away visits to Denmark in all competitions (D2 L3), all of which have come in qualifying for either the World Cup (D1 L1) or Euros (D1 L2).

• Both sides – Denmark and Northern Ireland haven’t faced each other in any competition match since November 2007, a game won 2-1 by Northern Ireland in Belfast in a European Championship qualifier.

The betting tip. Denmark win.

Event # 2 – INT Fri – Poland vs Germany – 1:45 PM

Euro 2024 hosts Germany resume their summer friendly schedule with a high-profile international friendly against Poland today, Friday, June 16, in Warsaw. This follows an exciting 3-3 draw against Ukraine on Monday, in which they rescued themselves from total embarrassment at the death, with two late goals on home turf. It was the second-straight game in which Germany had conceded three goals, following their 2-3 loss against Belgium in March.

As the host nation, Germany doesn’t have to play in the 2024 Euro qualifiers, however, they will be aiming to use these upcoming friendlies to shore up their leaky defence and improve on their overall form. Indeed, Germany have won just four games from their last 14 matches in all competitions, keeping a mere two clean sheets during this run. History, however, favours Germany against Poland, as they have only lost once in 21 head-to-head encounters against the Poles, although they have only beaten Poland once in their last five recent clashes. Poland, on the other hand, will enter today’s clash having gone unbeaten in each of their last six friendlies, since a 1-0 home loss in 2018. However, Poland’s Euro 2024 campaign didn’t get off to the best of starts as they were humbled 3-1 by the Czech Republic in their opening match, but three days later, they rebounded with a 1-0 win over Albania to get back on track.

Key Stats

• Poland – Poland has conceded 2 or more goals in three of their last four matches.

• Germany – Germany has conceded three goals in their last two games. But has scored at least two or more goals in four consecutive matches. Indeed, Germany have 13 wins, 7 draws, and only 1 loss in the last 21 clashes against Poland.

• Both sides – Both teams last met each other in the 2016 EURO qualifiers when Germany claimed four points from the two clashes against Poland.

The betting tip. Germany win.
