AFTER losing his mother on Friday, owner Everton Rose stood and watched with tears of joy and anguish streaming down his face as his charge, She’s My Destiny, swept all before her to win the 49th staging of the $2.5-million Philip Feanny Gold Cup feature at Caymanas Park on Monday.

She’s My Destiny came from behind to beat competitors by a length and a half in the Open Allowance/Graded Stakes contest for three-year-olds and upward over seven furlongs (1,400m). It was the five-year-old chestnut filly’s fourth-consecutive win from nine starts this season, and she came home in a time of 1:25.0 (23.1 x 46.0 x 1:10.4).

Rose, who is part-owner along with Akim Mahadiow of She’s My Destiny, expressed his love for his mother as he dedicated the Gold Cup win to her.

“This race is dedicated to my mother,” Rose told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.”She died last Friday.

“I flew in for her at the hospital and I told her that I was going to do it for her. I ran with two hearts today and she did it for mamma, She’s My Destiny did it for mama. She’s My Destiny is the best horse. Mi love God. And mamma, mi love you,” Rose responded while pausing between sentences to catch his breath.

She’s My Destiny, ridden by Ramon Nepare and trained by Jason DaCosta, started the race in a close second to Rojorn Di Pilot (Oneil Mullings). She’s My Destiny was then slowed a bit by Nepare, allowing Mahogany (Robert Halledeen) and I’ve Got Magic (Paul Francis) to pursue the front-runner down the backstretch.

Mahogany took control and started to open up on opponents as She’s My Destiny began to make her move while navigating the half-mile (800m).

When all seemed lost for She’s My Destiny in the stretch, and Mahogany appeared to be the likely winner at the furlong pole, Nepare produced his mount and the Bern Identity – Woman Is Boss progeny exploded like a cannonball on fire and powered home to victory.

Mahogany finished in second place, some 4¾ lengths ahead of Jamaica Derby winner Ability, ridden by Jordan Barrett.

It was the second winner on the nine-race card for DaCosta as the champion conditioner earlier saddled Heart of the Sea (Abigail Able) in the fourth race over the five-straight (1,000m) course.

Able had earlier brought Joblane home for trainer Richard Azan, giving her two winners. It was Able’s first occasion riding two winners in a single racing meet. Shamaree Muir had two victories as well. The former two-time champion apprentice rode Skyrizi for trainer Donovan Plummer in the first race and Money Miser for breeder, owner, and trainer Fitzroy Glispie in the final event.
