A WINNER FOR APPRENTICE OSHANE NUGENT
Former champion apprentice rider Oshane Nugent scored a long-overdue win aboard Jupiter Man in a Restricted Allowance V event for native-bred four-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of two) and imported four-year-old and upwards (maidens) travelling 6½ furlongs (1,300m).
Nugent broke the Delroy Wisdom-trained Jupiter Man in good order when the starting barriers opened as the bay colt raced in second position behind Joe (Tevin Foster) down the backstretch before taking up the running heading into the half-mile (800m) turn. Jupiter Man was then challenged by AKA Storm (Jerome Innis), with the two locked in battle when entering the lane. .
Nugent kept his mount well-balanced in deep stretch as Jupiter Man found extra and drew off to win by a length and a quarter in a time of 1:22.4. Don Vincenzo (Anthony Thomas) came from far behind to get second place, with AKA Storm occupying the third slot.
TIMETOSAYGOODBYE SCORES DOWN THE STRAIGHT
Timetosaygoodbye, trained by Donovan Russell and ridden by Roger Hewitt, romped home to his second-consecutive victory in a five-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming ($180,000-$150,000) spread that included native-bred six-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of two) going 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight.
In the early stages, Timetosaygoodbye battled for the lead with Sly Stalloon (Matthew Bennett) and Waltzing Matilda (Anthony Allen). As the runners sorted themselves out, Valiant (Anthony Thomas) got into the mix and challenged for the lead crossing the dummy rails as Waltzing Matilda was pulled up during the race.
With three horses vying for the lead Timetosaygoodbye found extra to pull away winning by two and a half lengths at the finish, ahead of Valiant and Sly Stallon. The final time for the race was 1:04.2.
RANDOLPH SCOTT, ANDRE’ MARTIN COMBINE FOR FIRST WIN OF 2023
Trainer Randolph Scott and jockey Andre’ Martin combined to win their race for the season with Without Remorse in a Restricted Maiden Condition call for native-bred four-year-olds and upwards at 4½ furlongs (900m).
Without Remorse shot to the front at the off and matched strides with English Anne (Youville Pinnock), Cave Man (Ramon Nepare), and Wildfire (Anthony Thomas). For the first half of the race the four-year-old chestnut colt stayed with the field before lengthening strides after passing the dummy rails.
Without Remorse began to shorten in the final stages of the race but held on to win by three-quarters of a length over Wildfire. Cave Man finished third, with the final time recorded at 56.1 seconds.
NINA DORADA CONQUERS AGAIN
Six-year-old bay mare Nina Dorada continued to reap success in the claiming ranks as the Winchester McIntosh trainee completed a quick double in a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming ($250,000-$200,000) event that included native-bred six-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of three) and imported six-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of two) over 6 furlongs (1,200m).
Nina Dorada was prominent at the start, settling in second place behind Uncle Wal (Robert Halledeen) in the early exchanges. Approaching the half-mile, Nina Dorada surged to the front ahead of Uncle Wal as the two fleet-footed runners drew clear from the rest of the field.
Approaching the distance, Nina Dorada began to edge away from Uncle Wal and turned for home with a sizeable lead. Nina Dorada wasted no time in deep stretch and went on to win by 2¾ lengths.
Uncle Wal was second while Ridewiththemob (Youville Pinnock) came home in third place. The final time for the race was 1:18.0.
ELEVEN HORSES CLAIMED
In the fourth race David Powell claimed Sly Stalloon for owner Wayne Crosdale for $180,000 from Norman Smith, Byron Davis claimed Party Princess for owner Clive Robinson for $180,000 from Linton Calder, and Cashbert Khwalsingh claimed Fiery Path for owner Gilbert Khwalsingh, also for $180,000, from Raymond Townsend.
In the sixth race Lincoln Lungs claimed Ridewiththemob for owner Ricardo Brown from Delroy Wisdom, Roy Matthews claimed Divine Lexie for owner Sandra Solomon from Ian Roberts, Winchester McIntosh claimed Uncle Wal for owner Damion Rylie from Dennis Thwaites; and Michael McIntosh claimed Nina Dorada for himself from Winchester McIntosh. The sixth event’s horses were all claimed for $250,000 each.
In the 11th and final race, Lincoln Lungs claimed Colorado Ranger for owner Courtney Thorpe from Steven Todd, Donovan Plummer claimed Another Bullet for owner Langford Jackto from Gary Crawford, Linton Calder claimed Aphelios for himself from Phillip Elliott, and Dennis Pryce claimed Zabratone for owner Busy Racing Stable from Winchester McIntosh. All horses from the 11th event were claimed for $550,000 each.
