KWAKU GOES ONE BETTER

Kwaku, after finishing second to Buff Bay over 7 furlongs (1,400m) on September 10, returned and went one better at a distance of 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m).

The race was a native bred five-year-old and upwards (non-winners of four), and imported six-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of four).

With Bebeto Harvey in the saddle for trainer Owen Sharpe, Kwaku settled just off the pace in fourth position going into the half-mile (800m) turn. Big Argument (Oneil Mullings) led the field into the turn ahead of Soul Amia (Roger Hewitt) and Little Grovy Thing (Sadiki Blake).

Kwaku hugged the inside rails, cut the turn entering the lane, and came with a strong run in deep stretch to win by 2 ¼ lengths in a time of 1:09.0 (23.4 x 48.1). Little Grovy Thing was second and Soul Amia third.

RENEX BURRELL, MARLON ANDERSON OFF THE MARK IN 2023

Trainers Renex Burrell and Marlon Anderson saddled their first winners for the season when their charges Jaxson and Super Duper, respectively, won their races.

Jaxson, ridden by Oshane Nugent, won a native-bred five-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) at 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m).

Jaxson easily won by 8 ½ lengths ahead of Mule Train (Phillip Parchment) and Matriarch (Jordan Barrett) in a time of 1:23.4 (24.4 x 49.4 x 1:16.1).

With apprentice Oshadane Robinson in the saddle, Super Duper made all the running to win a three-year-old and upwards Claiming ($1m-$800,000) call travelling 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight.

Super Duper without any fuss by 3 ¾ lengths ahead of Phoenix Risen (Shamaree Muir) and Den Street (Oshane Nugent). The race finished in a time of 1:00.0 (22.4 x 46.0).

WATERMAN JOHN RELEASES MAIDEN TAG

Three-year-old bay colt Waterman John, after nine career starts, finally found his head in front at the wire in a native-bred three-year-olds over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m).

Waterman John, trained by Fitzgerald Richards and ridden by Tevin Foster, exited his starting stall in good order, quickly assuming the early advantage. Waterman John led ahead of Simply Sensational (Bebeto Harvey), War Horse (Phillip Parchment), and Oh My (Matthew Bennett) down the backstretch.

Waterman John maintained his gallop until approaching the distance when he began to open up on rivals and continued his way to an easy 6 ½ length win margin at the wire. Joblane (Shavon Townsend) came home in second place with War Horse getting third place in a final time of 1:21.0 (24.2 x 48.1 x 1:14.0).

LOOSE CANNON IN EASY ROMP

Loose Cannon easily won a Claiming ($250,000 -$200,000) spread for three-year-olds and upwards who have not earned $160,000 since May 24, 2023, going 4 ½ furlongs (900m).

Loose Cannon disputed the early lead with Chitu Prince (Javaniel Patterson), with both horses drawing away from rivals in a battle of their own. Moving across the dummy rails to the main track, jockey Shavon Townsend sent the Andrew McDonald-trained Loose Cannon on his way and the chestnut horse sprinted clear for an easy 5 ½-length win.

Chitu Prince finished in second place, some 9 ½ lengths ahead of Reggae Gone Grammy (Devon A Thomas) in third place. The final time for the race was 55.0 (24.0 x 47.0).

FOUR CLAIMS

In the fifth race, Donwell Dawes claimed Hunter’s Ridge for owner Akim Mahadiow from Delroy Wisdom, Damon Gayle claimed Call The Emperor for owner Rupert Gayle from Lesra Thompson, and Ryan Williams claimed Chitu Prince for owner Doreen Stephen from Carlton Cunningham. All claims from the fifth event were for $250,000.

Alphanso Harris claimed Hail Mary for owner Derron Herah from Gordon Lewis for $180,000 from the seventh race.
