Asafa to attend UN’s
NEW YORK, United States – As the world celebrates the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), Olympian, former world record holder and sprint legend Asafa Powell is set to attend the United Nations “Making a Difference Beyond the Game” event in New York as a specially invited guest.
The event, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, will be held at the Turkish House, 821 First Ave in New York and aims to recognise the positive role sport and physical activity plays in the lives of individuals and communities across the globe.
Powell, who is considered to be one of the greatest sprinters of all time, having won numerous medals and accolades throughout his illustrious career, has been a strong advocate for the positive impact of sports and physical activity on individuals and communities. In a release on Wednesday, the UN said it is honoured to have the world’s fourth-fastest man over 100m join in their celebrations.
“The United Nations is honored to have Asafa Powell join the celebration of IDSDP and the positive impact that sports have on individuals and communities around the world. His career in athletics has inspired many young athletes to pursue their dreams and has shown the power of hard work and dedication,” a part of the release read.
“Making a Difference Beyond the Game” will showcase the important role of sports in promoting social inclusion, gender equality, and youth empowerment. It will feature a panel discussion, presentations by a myriad of experts and athletes as well as interactive activities to engage attendees and highlight the importance of sports in creating a better world.
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP) is an annual celebration of the power of sport to drive social change, community development, and promote peace around the world. The United Nations designated April 6 as IDSDP in 2013, recognising the role that sports and physical activity play in promoting sustainable development and peace.
