BOJ to investigate possible defective banknotes
KINGSTON, Jamaica – On Tuesday, the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ) announced that it is conducting an investigation into allegations of defective polymer banknotes following a viral social media post.
The investigation was initiated after a woman posted a one-minute video on TikTok on Monday, showcasing a thousand-dollar note with missing features on the holographic foil.
In a social media post, the BOJ stated, “We have initiated an investigation into the matter. If anyone else has encountered a similar issue, they are encouraged to visit the Bank, where the banknote will be tested and replaced if deemed genuine.”
Additionally, the BOJ is advising the public to report any problems with the new banknotes to its central bank located in downtown Kingston.
The new banknotes were introduced last Thursday and are gradually replacing the previous circulation of $228 billion in notes.
