Clarendon, Manchester and Glenmuir through to d’Cup second round

KINGSTON, Jamaica— Three more schools— defending champions Clarendon College, Ben Francis KO holders Glenmuir High and Manchester High— qualified for the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition on Tuesday.

Clarendon College and Manchester High cruised through after wins over minnows Thompson Town and Mt St Joseph Catholic in their respective zones, extending their perfect win records in the process while Glenmuir got in without breaking a sweat after contenders Old Harbour High and Denbigh High drew 2-2 in Zone L.

Clarendon College who had led 1-0 when the game was suspended last week, won 5-0 to run their record to six straight wins to top Zone H while Manchester High won 3-0 to take their record to eight straight games in Zone F.

After Tuesday’s results, 14 teams have now qualified for the second round, joining Cornwall College and Irwin High from Zone A; Rusea’s High and Frome Technical from Zone B, Cedric Titus High from Zone C, St Elizabeth Technical from Zone F, Dinthill Technical from Zone J, Morant Bay High and Paul Bogle High from Zone K, Garvey Maceo High from Zone M and Happy Grove High from Zone N.

Keheim Dixon scored a hat trick on Tuesday to lead Clarendon College who are yet to concede a goal in their six games played while Christopher Hull got a brace.

Clarendon College’s 18 points from six games means they cannot finish lower than second in the Zone.

Manchester High’s win took them to 24 points and confirmed their place in the second round as Belair High solidified their second place with a 6-0 win over May Day High with Ajwani Wauchope and Christian Henry both scoring doubles.

deCarteret College are still in contention with their 5-3 win over Cross Keys High led by a double from Raheem Russell.

Glenmuir High’s 16 points ensured they cannot finish lower than second place in Zone L after Denbigh High and Old Harbour High drew their game and neither team can now finish with more than 14 points.

Central High School’s game away to Porus High was not played and while they should be awarded the points, they have to win the final game to get into the next round.

Petersfield High slowed up Black River High’s run to the second round in Zone D, beating them 3-2 and avenged their first round loss.

The result left three teams, Mannings School, Black River and Petersfield High all on 13 points but while Petersfield High have completed their fixtures, Mannings School has two games to play and Black River one.

Vere Technical opened up space between themselves and third place Kemps Hill High after beating Tacius Golding High 3-0 in Zone M.

Xavier James, Davalio Gillard and Deonjay Brown all scored doubles to lead Rusea’s High to a big 8-0 beating of Merlene Ottey High in their return round Zone B game in Lucea as they returned to the top with 19 points.

It took Rusea’s just over 33 minutes to break down Merlene Ottey but once they started scoring it was one way traffic.
