Former winners off to good start in d’Cup quarter-finals
Defending champions Clarendon College as well as former winners Garvey Maceo High, Glenmuir High and Dinthill Technical scored victories as the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition kicked off on Wednesday.
Clarendon College and Garvey Maceo High both scored 4-0 wins over Christiana High and BB Coke respectively, while Glenmuir High and Dinthill Technical scored 2-0 wins over Manchester High and Cornwall College respectively.
Kaheim Dixon put on a superb performance for Clarendon College in their game played at Manchester High in Mandeville, scoring twice and assisting on the other two goals scored by Christopher Hull and Tedane Williams as they took control of Group A on goal-difference over Glenmuir High.
Clarendon College responded positively from their 1-1 draw against Cornwall College in their Round of 16 game played on Saturday, the first time this season they failed to get maximum points.
At the St Elizabeth Technical Sports Complex, Jelani Williams scored a double while Cleo Clarke and Conroy Williams also got on the score sheet as Garvey Maceo High took the advantage in Group B.
The loss ended a string of five straight wins for BB Coke High who were the only school to win all three Round of 16 games.
At Glenmuir High in May Pen, the ‘home team’ scored twice in a period of four minutes early in the second half to beat Manchester High 2-0.
Ja-son Whyte scored a spectacular free kick from some 25 yards out, his first goal of the season, to give Glenmuir High the lead in the 51st minute.
They doubled the scores in the 55th minute when 16-year-old Orane Watson’s shot went under the goalkeeper and he got his sixth goal of the season.
At the Ewarton Sports Complex, Dinthill Technical avenged last season’s Round of 16 loss to Cornwall College with a 2-0 win, both goals coming from set plays.
Tyrese Gowe’s long-range free kick got through the legs of the Cornwall College goalkeeper as the two-time champions took the lead late in the game and Giovannie Afflick doubled the advantage when he converted from the penalty spot.
