Gospel deejay Sone G goes retro with ‘God Real’
Even though he was a boy for most of the 1990s, Sone G remembers being drawn to the songs of one of dancehall music’s most popular outfits – The Main Street Crew.
Now a gospel deejay, the South Florida-based artiste goes retro on God Real which is a nod to dancehall’s most commercially-successful decade.
“The riddim drive the song in that direction, so it was easy to put the requisite energy with it,” said Sone G, who targets a diverse audience whenever he records.
“My songs have lots of connection points for Christians, non-Christians, young or veteran. I can see this connecting with fans who grew up listening to Terror Fabulous, artistes from that era,” he said.
Sone G (born Cecil Wilson) is from Rocky Point, Clarendon, a seafaring region also known for its rich sound system culture. His hometown nurtured his appreciation for dancehall music, and inspires him to do songs like God Real.
Despite criticism from conservatives, he said the reach of dancehall-reggae has no boundaries.
“It’s having a very significant impact on the Church and society at large. I was impacted by the gospel version of Main Street Crew way back in the day, so I know it’s growing and having a huge impact,” Sone G stated.
God Real is Sone G’s third song for 2023. It follows God is Always There For You and The King.
