KINGSTON, Jamaica — State Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Pearnel Charles Jr says the ministry has referred 30 cases related to the Windrush immigration crisis to the British High Commission.

While speaking at the 6th Biennial Jamaican Diaspora UK Conference on Saturday, the state minister said 20 the cases were as a result of the advertisements that were placed in print and on social media.

He said the ministry is aware that two people on this list were granted visas to travel to the UK, adding: “We continue to closely monitor this situation.”

In highlighting the efforts of the government to assist undocumented migrants, the state minister stated that “the ministry through the Consular Affairs Department and the Jamaican High Commission in London continue to actively monitor developments to inform our responses and advice to our nationals.”

“The ministry has consulted with stakeholders including the British High Commission in Kingston, the National Organisation of Deported Migrants (NODM); Open Heart Shelter in Montego Bay and Open Arms Shelter in Kingston, in order to identify individuals who may have been deported and are eligible for their cases to be reviewed.”

The state minister also urged those affected by the Windrush crisis to make contact with the Foreign Ministry in how to pursue their cases by the British High Commission in Kingston.

He also used the occasion to pay tribute on the behalf of the Government of Jamaica, to the Windrush Generation for their “bravery, endurance and tenacity.”
