KINGSTON, Jamaica- Vice President of the People’s National Party (PNP) Ian Hayles, is urging the Government to recall the new banknotes which he suggests are confusing members of the public.

Jamaicans, including members of the business community, have been complaining that they have been confused by the banknotes, in particular because the different denominations are similar in colour.

Stating that the Government “bring new money” Hayles said the $50 look like the $5, 000. The $100 …look like the $1,000, the $1000 bill look like the $2,000 bill. I’m calling on the government to tek back all a that money, it is no good.”

Hayles was speaking at the annual conference of the People’s National Party (PNP) at the National Arena on Sunday.

He also said the Jamaican dollar has lost its value, noting that at the supermarket there is always somebody [an employee] standing behind the cashier whose job it is to put things back on the shelves as shoppers are forced to leave goods that they can’t pay for.

“What $10,000 used to buy, a (is) it $6,000 a buy now,” Hayles remarked. “You stand at the cashier and a put back, a drawback and a haul back because you can’t afford it anymore, cost a living in this country has gone sky high, that would never happen under the People’s National Party.”

The PNP vice president pointed to recent public opinion polls which show that 60 per cent of Jamaicans believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

“This government is bankrupt of ideas. This government is bankrupt of a plan to rebuild Jamaica and this government is bankrupt of the moral authority to lead this country,” he declared.

Hayles said that over the seven years of the Jamaica Labour Party administration, “the haves have been having more and the have nots have been having less.”

He remarked that the PNP, under President Mark Golding, is more united than ever and is “ready to rescue Jamaica.”
