Jamaican-born judge to preside at Donald Trump’s trial

History beckons as a Jamaica-born Judge, Tanya Sue Chutkan, will preside over the case against former United States President Donald Trump who has been indicted for attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

This is Trump’s third indictment yet he remains the leading contender for the Republican Party in what is a likely rematch against US President Joe Biden, in the 2024 election.

Chutkan was born in Kingston in July 1962 and pursued her education at George Washington University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. She later graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School with a Juris Doctor degree in 1987.

She was appointed to the federal court as a judge by President Barack Obama and won Senate confirmation 95-0.
