Man killed in gun attack outside St Catherine school
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica— A man was shot and killed just outside a primary school on St John’s Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, Monday morning.
The deceased has been identified as 48-year-old Garnett Powell, otherwise called ‘Don’, a poultry farmer from Kitson Town in the parish.
It was reported that around 11:20 am, Powell was walking near the St John’s Primary School when a man armed with a handgun approached from the opposite side of the road.
Police said the man opened fire at Powell, who ran off. The gunman chased him for some distance and continued firing at him, hitting him several times in the upper body. The gunman then fled on foot.
Powell, the police said, was assisted by a unit from the Specialised Operation team to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
No motive has yet been established for the attack.
