PM Holness leads tributes to Queen Elizabeth II
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Prime Minister Andrew Holness led tributes locally to Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday following the death of the longest-reigning British monarch.
Queen Elizabeth II died Thursday after 70 years on the throne. She was 96.
Holness said it was “with great and profound sadness” that he learnt of the passing of the Queen.
He said Jamaica joins its brothers and sisters in the Commonwealth in mourning her passing.
The Prime Minister also offered condolences to the members of the royal family and the people of the United Kingdom as they grieve the loss of their beloved Queen and matriarch.
In the meantime, Mark Golding, Leader of the Opposition, hailed the Queen as a “symbol of decency, stability & continuity” for many people across the world throughout their lives.
Floyd Green also expressed condolences to the Queen’s family and by extension, the United Kingdom.
The Queen’s eldest son, Charles, 73, succeeds as king immediately, according to centuries of protocol, beginning a new chapter for the royal family.
