WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – It was pandemonium at the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) conference on Sunday night in Westmoreland as former three-term People’s National Party (PNP) Councillor Milton Miles switched allegiance to the JLP.

Miles, who served as councillor for the Savanna-la-Mar division from 2007 to 2016, told labourites that he was jumping ship because he wanted to see improvement in the town.

“I feel like I have to put people above politics and I decided to support an organisation that will work with the people, so I decided that I will work with with the Jamaica Labour Party, to see the development of Sav-la-Mar,” Miles announced.

Miles was presented with a green shirt to replace the gold shirt he wore to the conference, and was given a formal welcome into the party”.

“Mr Miles, we the labour party in the area council four from this day forward anoint you as the newest member of the Jamaica Labour Party,” Member of Parliament Heroy Clarke, the chairperson of the meeting, shouted in excitement.

Miles blasted the PNP-controlled Westmoreland Municipal Corporation for what he said was its lack of support while he was in the party, and the condition of Savanna-la-Mar which he stressed needs development.

“I have a passion to serve, I am service oriented. The Municipal Corporation under its present leadership is not doing anything to develop the town of Sav-la-Mar,” he argued.

Not denying that he too could have done much more while he was a sitting councillor, Miles blamed the lack of support from the WMC as the reason.

“I was born and grown in this town and I confess that in my time I could have done more if I had gotten more support; we had 14 councillors and a mayor that was serving for three terms,” Miles said.
