WATCH: Williams expressed sadness at death of boys in Westmoreland fire

KINGSTON, Jamaica— Education Minister Fayval Williams has expressed sadness at the passing of the three boys who were killed in a fire at their house in Springfield, Westmoreland on Sunday evening.

She was speaking at a school tour at the Mountain View Primary School in Kingston on Monday morning.

“Our heart mourns for the family and I know that our agency, CPFSA (Child Protection and Family Services Agency), has been activated and they should be there already with the family to provide the necessary support,” Williams said.

The deceased are seven-year-old twins Jayden and Jorden Laing as well as their eight-year-old brother Adrianno Laing.

Only their 13-year-old sister, Adrianna Laing survived, though she suffered severe burns and remains in hospital.

“You know it’s never, ever good to hear of tragedy on our children. When all of us should be excited to go back to school we had to wake up to this news this morning of the three children who died in the fire and their sister, I believe, who is in hospital. We are praying and hoping that she will recover fully of all of this and we want to say to the parent that we are there with you, we support you,” the minister added.

When OBSERVER ONLINE visited the community on Monday, residents expressed shock and disbelief at the incident.

The children’s grandmother Beverley Campbell was devastated after seeing the charred remains of the house where her three grandchildren burnt to death.

Reports from the police are that the father of all four children, 48-year-old Adrian Laing was at home with them when he lit a candle after a power outage in the community.

Laing, a music selector popularly known as ‘DJ Bones’, subsequently went outside and, shortly after, the house was engulfed in flame. Efforts were made to rescue the children, however only Adrianna was saved due to the magnitude of the blaze, according to the police report.
