Representing the small man
Dear Editor,
I write in response to the article ‘Government providing free lands to 5,000 farmers, says Charles Jr’, published in the Jamaica Observer on May 18.
What a real relief for agriculture in Jamaica, and what an amazing initiative to boost local farming while alleviating the impact of the global food shortage.
I would just like to say that I think we need more forward thinkers like Minister Pearnel Charles Jr, whose leadership and dynamism continue to keep Jamaica in a favourable position and impede any shortages like that which other countries currently have to face.
Charles announced in his sectoral presentation that $63 million will be invested over 12 months to provide over 260 acres of land to vulnerable groups.
Particularly impressive is the fact that these lands are to be distributed to mainly youth and women. Not only will it encourage young people and more women to become agriculturalists, but it will also help to increase local produce.
This is such great news.
If we can stay ahead of the global crisis, Jamaica will be able to firmly weather this storm without much scathing. It is commendable that we have representatives who really represent the interests of the small man.
