Put yuh two hand in the air

If you’re planning to participate in the Carnival Road March come Sunday, April 16, you probably already have the most important thing: Your costume!

That’s a good start, but Carnival vet Stacy Belnavis insists you’ll need a bit more to have a pleasant time. “Soca literally flows through my veins. I grew up in a home where my parents hosted soca parties/limes for close friends. And so my long-standing love for the music, and Carnival, was rooted. Chipping down the road officially since 2005, I’m no stranger to Trinidad and Jamaica carnivals. I love the road experience and am delighted to share some tips,” shared Belnavis.

Tuesday Style Dryer (TSD) is all ears.

1. The last thing you want to do is miss your early morning make-up/hair glam session. Set your alarm, especially if you are out feting the night before.

2. Costumes aren’t like what they used to be and require much skill and practice in figuring out how to put them on. Do a dry run (preferably days before) to ensure they fit and that you know how to put them together on Road March Day. This also allows you to be less stressed.

3. Bring your stockings/tights A-game, in terms of style (glitter vs no glitter) and ensure the waist cut matches costume style, eg V-cut tights for V-cut costume bottoms.

4. Prioritise sunblock for face and body.

5. Walk with make-up blotting pads, perfume, lipstick/lipgloss and powder on the road.

6. Blot, blot, blot!

7. For a hands-free experience, invest in either a thighlet, wristlet or fanny pack for the essentials.

8. Boots are also another cool place to store money, make-up and phones.

9. While on the road, pick a designated spot where everyone can meet in the event people get lost. For example, left side/right side, truck one or two.

10. Stay hydrated. The sun does not play!
