Cop charged with attempting to pervert course of justice
A police constable charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice was on Tuesday yesterday offered $100,000 bail when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Constable Chadwick Bowen, who is assigned to the Narcotics Division, was offered bail by Senior Magistrate Judith Pusey on condition that he surrenders his travel documents with a stop order in place at all ports.
Bowen is scheduled to return to court for a trial on June 14.
The charge against Bowen stems from an alleged attempted drug smuggling incident at the Norman International Airport
It is alleged that on January 19, 2015, the constable was on duty at the airport when he was alerted about the presence of drugs in the suitcase of a British national by Canine police and a dog.
Bowen allegedly opened the suitcase, which contained the ganja, and allowed the British national to proceed to the boarding gate.
Another officer allegedly searched the suitcase in Bowen’s presence and found $11.2 pounds of ganja. The British national was also searched and 0.2 ounce of hashish was reportedly found strapped to his groin.
The matter was reported and a case file was sent to the Director of Public Prosecution Paula Lllewellyn who recently ruled that Bowen should be arrested and charged.
Attorneys Peter Champagnie and Kemar Robinson are representing the accused constable.
