THE popular Crab Circle roadside eatery at National Heroes’ Circle in Kingston is scheduled to be reopened today with an official ceremony at 4:00 pm by the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC), which is responsible for the facility.

The reopening comes six weeks after the facility was closed by health authorities, following the release of a social media video which showed a female vendor wiping herself inside a stall where food was being sold. As a result of that and other unsanitary conditions, the Kingston Health Department ordered the food spot closed.

The KSAMC subsequently developed a partnership with the HEART/NSTA Trust, under which all the vendors who operator at the facility underwent mandatory personal hygiene, and correct food preparation training.

They have been issued with food handler’s permits by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, which has also accredited the venue as suitable for preparing and selling food.

It was not clear up to yesterday whether the vendor who was captured wiping herself after defecating in a stall in front of which food was being sold, will be able to resume selling at the 12-stall eatery. Kingston Mayor Delroy Williams has insisted that she will not be able to return to the site because of other sanitary concerns which led the health authorities to the close the food spot.

The video, which exposed the female vendor, was recorded by another who said that she had made the recording because she was tired of what she described as a regular occurrence at the establishment by the offender.

The KSAMC, during the closure, built fully functional restroom facilities at the eatery.
