PNP says Meadows still in contention

FALMOUTH, Trelawny — Chairman of the People’s National Party (PNP) Region One, Dr Pauline Foster has refuted claims that the party is no longer considering Dennis Meadows as a candidate for the Trelawny Northern constituency.

“Anybody who’s saying anything like that is very, very uninformed and ill-advised,” Dr Foster said.

Meadows also told the Jamaica Observer that he was ignorant of any such development.

“I am not aware of it,” Meadows said.

Dr Foster, like Meadows, explained that there has been a postponement of the selection conference that was initially slated for Saturday, August 19 at the Falmouth All Age School.

She explained that from time to time these postponements happen for various reasons.

“These postponements happen more often than you know. The selection conference in South Trelawny, the date was also changed, in North East St Elizabeth also. So this is something that happens all the time for various reasons,” she said.

“The selection conference date for Trelawny Southern was moved to August 13, due to scheduling issues,” she added.

She noted that the resheduled date for the Trelawny Northern selection conference is not yet confirmed.

“A new date has not been confirmed, however, when those dates are changed and we have to find new dates, it is in collaboration with the secretariat, the region and the constituency,” Dr Foster said.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Observer was privy to a copy of a letter from the party’s general secretary’s office, expressing apologies to Comrades in the constituency for any inconvenience resulting from the postponement.

“We understand the anticipation and preparations that have already gone into planning for the original date, and we apologise for any inconvenience this postponement may cause,” a portion of the letter stated.

“Once again, we express our sincerest apologies for any disruption this postponement may have caused. We are deeply grateful for your continued support and understanding,” the letter continued.

Attorney-at-law Tova Hamilton, who represents the ruling Jamaica Labour Party, is Member of Parliament for the constituency. She won the seat by defeating the PNP’s Victor Wright in the last general election.

Meadows, a turncoat, unsuccessfully vied for the seat in three elections on the JLP’s ticket.
