Soldier shot dead by colleague

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Monday said that Private Tevon Daymon had been shot and killed “following an unfortunate shooting” at Base Camp Stephenson, Timehri, located 41 kilometres to the south of the capital.

In a statement, the GDF said that preliminary investigations revealed that Daymon was shot by another soldier “while the two were performing security duties.

“He was rushed to the Diamond Hospital where he later died. The Guyana Police Force is investigating and the assailant is in their custody. This appears to be an isolated incident and does not reflect the overall discipline and professionalism of our ranks,” the GDF said in the statement.

It said that a board of inquiry will be convened to investigate the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting of Daymon and that the chief of staff, Brigadier Omar Khan, and other GDF members extend condolences to the parents and family of Daymon “and will ensure that all necessary support is given to the family at this time”.

Media reports here had said that Daymon had been shot and killed during an argument with a colleague and that the officer who shot him had armed himself with a high powered weapon, hitting Daymon multiple times to the body.

Meanwhile, police have issued a wanted bulletin for two men in connection with murder of GDF Coast Guard Officer, Lieutenant Rondell Douglas.

The police said Jamie Ghanie and Harold aka “Stewie” are being sought in connection with the death of Douglas, who was shot and killed on June 7, whilst using his private car to provide taxi services.

Douglas had been hired by a young man to be taken to the North Ruimveldt area in Georgetown where he was attacked by the man and an accomplice who shot him and fled in his vehicle.
