St Mary couple makes rum with a twist
GRAYS INN, St Mary — There’s something unmistakably unusual about the rum made by the husband and wife team of Wayne Clarke and Althea Solomon — it’s made with seasonal fruit found in Jamaica, including guava and mango.
“We are venturing into something that is different,” explained Solomon.
Harth of Nature Gold flinch Crystal Rum began in 2018 and it has taken some of its customers a while to embrace the concept.
Solomon said many of her customers are surprised by the smooth, tangy liquor taste blended with the flavour of fruit.
It has been a learning curve for the couple as they embraced their entrepreneurial role. The Social Development Commission’s (SDC) guidance has helped a lot.
“We didn’t know about branding and registration and external funding, [but] SDC guided us, and here we are,” said Solomon.
She was speaking with the Jamaica Observer during the recent St Mary Agriculture Expo, where the couple displayed their guava rum.
“During events like these we get a lot of positive feedback and would listen to suggestions that will make the product better,” Solomon explained.
Grateful to their relatives for the support given and hard work they have done to help build Harth of Nature Gold flinch Crystal Rum, the couple is now eyeing expansion locally and, ultimately, internationally.
