Having watched his rival Bouwahjgie Nkrumie run the first schoolboy sub-10 time in the 100 metres on Wednesday, Herbert Morrison Technical sprinter DeAndre Daley is hoping to break the barrier this season.

Nkrumie, the world Under-20 100m silver medallist, clocked a national junior and meet record 9.99 seconds to win the boys’ class one event during the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA)/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Championships at the National Stadium.

Daley was second in a personal best time of 10.14, while Jaiden Reid of Jamaica College (JC) was third in 10.26.

The 18-year-old Daley, who won the event at 2023 Western Championships, said he still has a lot left in his tank.

“I definitely know that I could have run a lot faster and that is the aim for me going forward for this season,” said Daley.

“I think that anything is possible because it could be soon that I will be running a sub-10 time and this is my aim going forward,” he said.

The soft-spoken Daley pointed out that his personal best clocking is a confidence booster for the remainder of the season.

“I am pretty happy because I knew that I had a lot of challenges in this race, but I didn’t let it bother me. I went out there to run my own race and I got a big PB [personal best] and that is all that matters.

“This is very important to me going forward because this will give a lot of confidence going into the Carifta Games.

“I think that 10.14 is really fast time and so 10.14 is on my name and so I am really happy,” Daley stated.

He noted he is in excellent shape at the moment and once he continues to train hard and remains disciplined and focused, he is backing himself to continue to run fast.

“But I am not ever satisfied because I know my talent level and how fast I can go and so now it is just back to the drawing board to correct whatever mistake that I have made in this final,” Daley said.

Daley gave kudos to Nkrumie for becoming the first schoolboy in Jamaica to run a sub-10 time.

“I want to tell him congratulations because he didn’t come up in the final last year and for him to comeback and win it, it is great for him,” Daley said.
