Frasziers Whip target solid performance as Women’s Premier League changes gear
With the first game rust and jitters now out the way, Frasziers Whip Head Coach Xavier Gilbert is anticipating a more solid performance from his team when they engage newcomers Springers United in the Jamaica Women’s Premier League (JWPL) at Wespow Park in Montego Bay today.
The Zone A contest scheduled for 1:00pm is the curtain-raiser of a double-header, with the feature being a Zone B clash between Cavalier and Real Mobay at 3:15 pm.
In the other Zone A game, St Mary’s Rangers FC and Baptiste Alliance of St Thomas will meet at 3:00 pm at Annotto Bay Multipurpose Sports Complex, while the other Zone B encounter set for the same time will see Mile Gully hosting Vere United at Brooks Park in Manchester.
For the youthful Frasziers Whip side which boasts a number of national youth representatives, today’s contest represents an early top-of-the-table clash following their 3-2 win over Olympic Gardens on opening day.
Springers United also opened with a 2-0 win over Baptiste Alliance, which sees them heading the zone by virtue of a slightly better goal difference.
But Gilbert, by all account, is expecting that to change at the end of what should be a good contest, as the Bradley Stewart-coached Springers United also has the likes of national Under-20 Captain Dannique Wilson in their line-up.
“We are looking forward to it, the girls are excited that they are playing again, which is good. The travel to Montego Bay is a bit tricky in terms of how they will manage it because its a young team and we don’t know how it will affect them,” Gilbert told the Jamaica Observer.
“But once all is well we should give a good account of ourselves, they [Springers United] are a young team as well and its their first time in the tournament but they have a few players who represented at the youth levels. So it should be a good competitive game between two young teams,” he added.
With Olympic Gardens being idle this week, Baptiste Alliance could move from the foot of the five-team Zone A, provided they get by Rangers FC, who will be making their seasonal bow.
In Zone B, Cavalier, who hammered Royal Lakes 9-0 on opening day, are favoured to make it two in two, as they face cellar-dwellers Real Mobay who lost 11-0 to early leaders Vere United.
That said, the Clarendon-based Vere will also fancy their chances against a Mile Gully team that will be making its debut at this level.
