JAAA hails non-traditional sport as squad to Hungary named
Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) President Garth Gayle says he is proud the body is able to send athletes in less traditional disciplines to the World Athletics Championships later this month.
The JAAA named a 65-member squad for the games during a press conference at its headquarters in St Andrew on Wednesday afternoon, which consists of 32 men and 33 women.
Notable in this year’s selection is the inclusion of Nyoka Clunis, who will compete in the Women’s Hammer Throw, and Romaine Beckford, who will take part in the Men’s High Jump. He joins Lamara Distin and Kimberly as Jamaica’s three representatives in that discipline this summer.
Gayle describes the selection as a “very strong team”.
“When I sat this morning doing the final contemplation of this team and what I saw – the first female hammer thrower being considered and selected for a national team to a World Championships, it means we’re not a country of only sprinters and jumpers. We are now breaking new frontier,” he said. “Howard Aris [late former JAAA president] would’ve been so happy that some of his dreams in providing the non-traditional disciplines with opportunities have now borne fruit. We are very happy about that. We take note also of the high jump men – that we were able to put a male and female high jumper into competition. We have covered most of the disciplines at Budapest and we look forward to excellent performances.”
The World Athletics Championships start from Saturday, August 19 to Sunday, August 27 in Budapest, Hungary.
