ST Jago High School Head Coach Wolry Wolfe says his team has what it takes to challenge for the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup title after going top of Group G with their rescheduled 2-0 win over Wolmer’s Boys’ at St Jago on Monday.

The match continued with the second half after the initial contest on September 16 was called off due to the rain, with St Jago leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Javar Harris in the 30th minute and Milton Lukain in the 40th.

The second 45 minutes provided a more fluent contest as there was no rain or a waterlogged pitch. Both teams created goalscoring chances but the boys from Monk street held on for the win.

They have now won their first three games, scoring eight goals and only conceding once. Wolfe is confident they can create some upsets going forward.

“St Jago definitely didn’t come to the Manning Cup [just] to participate,” he said. “We’re going to give our best account and see how far it takes us. Everybody wants to win the cup and ‘Jago’ is here to challenge for the cup so definitely, we looking forward to it.”

While lamenting some missed opportunities during the game, he credited his team for holding its composure.

“Nerves are going to be there,” he said. “It’s just to get them calm, focused, relaxed, and have patience with them. Today was kind of shaky [but in] the latter part of the game we saw more possession and composure — but, all in all, it wasn’t a bad run today.”

Wolmer’s Boys’ Head Coach Jerome Waite says his team would have gotten a better result if the first half played a week ago wasn’t affected by rain.

“Based on the conditions, it should have been called off a little earlier. But this is football, and ISSA don’t really want to have so many games not being played because, after a while, it’s going to be difficult for the schools,” he said.

However, he remains confident that the Heroes’ Circle-based boys will bounce back in the games to come.

“We finished pretty much stronger than the opposition,” Waite said. “We didn’t look like we came to a walk but, at the same time, we are a conditioned unit and we’re looking forward to great things down the road. “
