Originals lose despite Dottin fireworks
LONDON, England (CMC) — A typically pugnacious 42 off 26 balls from former West Indies Women’s all-rounder Deandra Dottin failed to spur Manchester Originals, and a destructive spell from teenaged pacer Ryana MacDonald-Gay propelled Oval Invincibles to a five-run win in the Women’s Hundred on Tuesday.
Dottin smashed three fours and three sixes — the last of which meant Originals needed 16 to win off 14 balls in a chase of 129 at the Kia Oval — but the 32-year-old Barbadian failed to score off the next four ball and the equation tightened for her side.
But a run out and two wickets to MacDonald-Gay — including Dottin — in the penultimate set of five balls that cost only three meant Originals needed 13 from the final set of five, and Eva Gray held her nerve and conceded only seven to hand the two-time defending champions their first win in three matches.
MacDonald-Gay ended with four for 16 from her 20 balls after she got Laura Wolvaardt lbw for 27 in her first five balls just when it appeared the South African opener was about to explode, and Ami Campbell caught at point for 17 in her second set of five balls.
Dottin hit MacDonald-Gay down the ground for four in her third set, but the 19-year-old pacer used her variations well in her final set and ended with the fourth-best bowling figures of the competition so far.
Earlier, Dottin did not bowl, but she was typically electric in the field and helped run out Paige Schofield for a duck after Originals won the toss and chose to field.
Invincibles, led by a top score of exactly 50 from England all-rounder Alice Capsey and 42 from former South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk, reached 128 for seven from their 100 balls.
